Terrence Crawford to fight on October 5th in Florida

crawford453By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten, #1 WBO, #4 IBF, lightweight contender Terrence Crawford (21-0, 16 KO’s) will be fighting on the undercard of the October 5th Miguel Cotto vs. TBA fight card at a still to be determined venue in Florida.

Crawford, 25, doesn’t have an opponent yet, but you can bet that it’s going to be someone good in order to drive interest in the card. Cotto could be fighting Delvin Rodriguez in the main event on this card, and it badly needs an interesting co-feature.

Crawford has been elevated to #1 by the World Boxing Organzation following his impressive 6th round TKO win over Alejandro Sanabria last June in Dallas, Texas.

This means that Crawford will be getting a shot against WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns REAL soon, likely by sometime in 2014 unless Burns vacates, gets permission to bypass Crawford again and again, or fights a unification match.

The sanctioning bodies let unification bouts go ahead of title defenses, so we could see Burns looking to do that rather than defend his title to Craword and take a one-sided loss.

Crawford may be the best fighter in the lightweight division right now. It’s a little to say that given that he’s still not faced Adrien Broner, Richard Abril and Miguel Vazquez, but he certainly looks to be the best when you watch him fight. He can do anything that the other champions can do, but better when he wants to.

His power is as good as or better than Broner, but what makes him even better than Broner is that he throws more punches and he throws with a lot of speed that catches his opponents off guard.

I’d like to see how Crawford does against Burns when the time comes for them to fight. I don’t give Burns much of any chance to win that fight, but unfortunately I don’t think he’ll ever take it. I can see Burns vacating and moving up to 147 rather than taking on Crawford.
