Floyd Mayweather arrives(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez decided to chime in with his own prediction about the September 14th match-up between unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1., 30 KO’s) in their mega-fight on Showtime.

Martinez thinks Mayweather’s advantage in experience will be too much for the 22-year-old Canelo to overcome and he sees Mayweather winning by a 12 round unanimous decision.

Sergio said to Ringtv, “I strongly believe that the experience of Mayweather will see him win a unanimous decision.”

That makes a lot of sense because Mayweather has the same kind of slick fighting style that Martinez has, and he knows how effective this kind of fighting style will be against a fighter that is unable to fight hard for 3 minutes of every round like Canelo due to his stamina problems.

Against a bigger fighter like Canelo who probably should have moved up to the middleweight division a year ago, Mayweather is going to be able to use his speed and movement to give the 170 lb. fighter fits.

It’s difficult for fighters as heavy as Canelo to face guys with the kind of speed that Mayweather possesses. I know Oscar De La Hoya has been bragging to anyone that will listen about Canelo’s supposedly fast hands, but his punches are very close in comparison to Mayweather, and he’s not going to beat Floyd in the speed department.

Canelo has to use his power and weight to bomb Mayweather out of there. That’s the main chance the red-haired Mexican has in winning this fight. It’s got to be a knockout because he’s not going to out-box a fighter like Mayweather.

Mayweather’s experience will definitely help him in this fight. He’s fought the Canelo-types before in bouts against Victor Ortiz, Carlos Baldomir, Jose Luis Castillo and in his many hours of sparring for his fights. Mayweather knows exactly how to defeat the 22-year-old Canelo and he’s not worried at all about the fight.

Mayweather knows he’s going to expose Canelo in this and show that he was just another Golden Boy Promotions fighter that they’ve decided to hype as the next big thing, but someone that will turn out to be the same fool’s gold that Ortiz and Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero turned out to be.
