maidana543By Allan Fox: The next big fight that Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer plans on putting together is a bout between Marcos Maidana (34-3, 31 KO’s), and WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) after the September 14th card headlined by Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. Schaefer just finished wrapping up negotiations between Lucas Matthysse and WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia for the co-feature on the Mayweathr-Canelo bout.

The next big fight that Schaefer wants to put together is Broner and Maidana. Schaefer is going to meet with Showtime, Broner and Maidana’s management to try and put together a deal.

Schaefer told RingTV “Now that Mayweathr and Canelo are done, and that Garcia and Matthysse is done, I think that Broner against Maidana would be the next biggest fight that you can make in the sport…A potential Broner-Maidana fight would be as entertaining as any fight I can think of.”

It’s definitely a good fight. The only thing better than Broner vs. Maidana would be Broner vs. Matthysse or Broner vs. Mayweather.
Broner needs to prove himself against Maidana to show that he’s got the talent to face the better fighters in boxing, because Maidana would be a huge test for Broner after his less than dominating performance against Paulie Malignaggi last month.

Maidana is a step up from Malignaggi, and Broner will have to bring another dimension to his game if he wants to beat Maidana. Sitting back using the shoulder role and throwing arm punches might not do the job against a guy like Maidana. Broner will have to be better than he was against Malignaggi.

Broner said on his twitter recently that he’d take care of one Argentinian fighter while Danny Garcia will take care of the other. Broner is clearly talking about him fighting Maidana. Hopefully, Broner doesn’t change his mind about wanting to fight the hard hitting Maidana.
