Rubio: I’m confident I can beat Chavez Jr.

chavez34By Dan Ambrose: Marco Antonio Rubio (57-6-1, 49 KO’s) feels confident about his chances to beat former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) when the two fighters face each other for the interim WBC middleweight title in the near future.

The World Boxing Council ordered that Rubio and Chavez Jr. must fight to determine an interim champion with the winner then facing WBC champ Sergio Martinez.

Rubio said to the Record “I am very interested in a rematch against Chavez because I was not satisfied and I have the confidence that I can win.”

Rubio lost to Chavez Jr. last year in February by a 12 round unanimous decision in February in San Antonio, Texas. Rubio gave Chavez Jr. a lot of problems with his hard shots, but he didn’t have the same kind of weight behind him that Chavez Jr. had in that fight.

In just looking at the two fighters in the ring, it was like watching two guys from two different weight classes. Chavez Jr. looked a light heavyweight/cruiserweight; whereas Rubio was just a normal middleweight in size. He didn’t have the size to compete against Chavez Jr, and he pretty much lost the fight by his lack of size.

Chavez Jr. has a fight coming up on September 7th against Brian Vera, but once that fight is out of the way then it could be Chavez Jr. facing Rubio unless he decides he doesn’t want to face Sergio Martinez.

I think that Chavez Jr. wants that fight a lot, so we could see Chavez Jr. and Rubio doing it once again. I don’t really know how the fight will be any different the first fight. Chavez Jr. will be bigger than Rubio, and with a 15-20 pound weight advantage, Chavez Jr. will be too big for him.
