Ricky Burns vows not to make mistakes against Beltran like he did against Jose Gonzalez

burns433By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (36-2, 11 KO’s) says he’s going to fix the mistakes he made in his last fight against Jose Gonzalez and fight at a higher level for his next title defense against Raymundo Beltran (28-6, 17 KO’s) in their fight on September 7th at the Scottish Exhibition Centre, in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom.

Burns was taking a beating and getting royally schooled by Gonzalez until the Puerto Rican fighter injured his wrist in the 8th round after having staggered Burns. The fight was halted after the 9th round due to Gonzales’ wrist causing him too many problems to continue fighting.

Burns said to the Andrie & Coatridge Advertiser “Raymundo is a great fighter. He’s never involved in a dull fight, and you’re not a sparring partner for Manny Pacquiao for nothing. I don’t cut any corners and I’ll be ready for what happens. The mistakes I made in the last fight? They are not happening this time.”

I honestly don’t remember any real mistakes that Burns was making. I just saw that he didn’t have the reach to land his punches against Gonzalez and was getting bombed from a mile away by the stronger fighters’ punches.

Gonzalez had the better jab, the better power, the better hand speed and the longer reach. Burns was getting schooled by a superior fighter until Gonzalez either was injured or gassed out. There was literally nothing Burns could do about until Gonzalez ran out of gas or was hurt.

Burns was out-gunned in that fight, just as he’d likely be badly outgunned if he were to face Terence Crawford or Omar Figueroa; except I couldn’t see Burns getting lucky with them getting injured or gassing out.

Beltran is ranked #6, so there’s a good chance that Burns wins this fight if the bout goes to the cards. Beltran is going to make it really tough on him though with his pressure and I can see this being one of Burns’ tougher fights unless he runs like he did against Michael Katsidis.
