“Rampage” Jackson vs. Roy Jones Jr. fight a possibility

By Allan Fox: A fight between former four division world champion Roy Jones Jr. and former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (32-11, 14 KO’s) is reportedly in the works for later on this year. It’ll be a boxing match, not a MMA fight, according to usatoday.

That puts the 35-year-old Jackson in a tough situation where he’ll have to try and score a knockout early otherwise he’s going to get dominated and stopped by the 44-year-old Jones Jr. As good as the MMA fighters are at wrestling and the mixed martial arts, they don’t have the skills to beat boxers in the ring.

It takes too many years to learn how to box and even in the best MMA fighters, would likely be trounced by 2nd and 3rd tier fighters. A top level fighter would be way too good for an MMA fighter.

Jackson is a good puncher, but he’s not boxer. He’s just someone that can throw hard shots. If he catches Jones Jr. with something big, he’d have a good chance of defeating him that way, but Jackson is going to have to deal with getting hit more than he’s been hit before. I don’t think he’s going to do well getting hit with body shots and a lot of shots from Jones Jr.

This fight has the hallmarks of a mismatch with Jones being much too skilled for Jackson to deal with him.

Jackson’s once promising MMA career has kind of gone downhill lately with him losing four out of his last seven fights. It’s been two years since Jackson last won a fight.

Jones Jr. had previously been planning on fighting Anderson Silva. However, those plans went down the drain when Silva was stopped by Chris Weidman. It’s a good thing that Silva didn’t fight Jones Jr. because he would have lost badly to the 44-year-old.

Even Weidman would likely be blown out by Jones Jr. Like I said, it takes way too many years for a fighter to learn boxing and you just can’t pick it up and work on it in between all the wrestling that these MMA fighters do an expect to be proficient with it against a real boxer. It works against other wrestler types, but not against a real boxer.
