Canelo and Mayweather(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Peart Miles: Hello readers of Boxing news 24, in this weeks edition of Punch Out weekly I will be discussing the fallout from Gennady Golovkin vs. Mathew Macklin, Froch vs Groves? And other big news and events from the past week in the boxing world.

Hello GGG

I will be completely honest, I wasn’t sure about Golovkin as I only seen him box Gabriel Rosado back in January and the YouTube clip of him facing Andre Dirrell in the 2004 Olympics. But after watching he’s performance against Macklin I can say,  Golovkin put on a fantastic show, solidifying himself as one of the must watch boxers in the game. It wasn’t just the power which stood out for me it was also the  fantastic footwork and balance, he’s confidence in the ring was also great. There wasn’t anything Macklin could do which could make Golovkin think twice before coming forward. Golovkin’s cool demeanor, patience and heavy hands will make him a threat for anyone between 154 to 168. We all want GGG to face Sergio Martinez next however Lou Di Bella the promoter of Martinez has said before Golovkin doesn’t bring any money or fans to the table. Well Golovkin vs. Macklin brought in 1.1 million views for HBO so Lou DiBella you might need to find another excuse not to make the bout happen.

Next for Macklin?

Macklin did nothing wrong against Golovkin, he just faced a much better opponent who maybe one of the best boxers in the world, what’s next for Macklin? Macklin has many options, he is still a world level middleweight and he can prove that by facing and defeating Britain’s best middleweights in Martin Murray, Darren Barker and Andy Lee. But first Macklin needs his well deserved break.

Oosthuizen just hype?

Before he’s bout with Brandon Gonzalez I wasn’t sold yet on Thomas Oosthuizen and I’m defiantly not now after Saturdays performance against Gonzalez. What’s apparent in Oosthuizen boxing makeup is that he has no head movement or ability to switch gears and box at a higher work rate. For a southpaw at the height of 6’4 ft, Oosthuizen has many advantages against he’s competition. But a lazy jab, flat feet, lack of head movement and at times a lazy work rate will make him more of an easier target at super middleweight. In fact with he’s awkward (but beatable style) some of the top guys at super middleweight may not wanted to fight him in the past. And after the performance against Gonzalez there maybe a good excuse not to fight him, he’s boring and won’t bring enough fans. Oosthuizen team needs to work on he’s work rate, jab, footwork, defense and he’s character if they want him back on HBO.

More of Mayweather?

During the super tour to hype the super fight against unbeaten light middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, Mayweather told reporters he may decide to box after the six fight deal with CBS/Showtime.  I remember when it was announced when Mayweather signed the six fight deal, I believed it was the wrong idea. I thought “Why would Floyd want to fight up to the age of 38/39, will he stay unbeaten after the deal, is there even six guys out there for him to face?” Well so far Mayweather has faced Guerrero and will be facing Alvarez in September. A victory against Alvarez leaves who? Khan, Alexander, Garcia and Matthysse? To me they are all easy bouts for Mayweather. Alvarez is the biggest challenge for Mayweather, so I don’t believe fighting after the deal makes sense, the public won’t want to watch re runs against Ortiz, Guerrero and anyone else (maybe Cotto and Alvarez though). The idea of Mayweather going against Golvokin and Martinez is quite silly to me. The talk for those bouts are from people who just want to see Floyd Mayweather lose. Yes both Martinez and Golovkin can make 154 for the bout and Mayweather has faced De La Hoya, Cotto and Alvarez at 154/152. But De La Hoya and Cotto are naturally small guys who have moved up in weight over the years and the Alvarez bout is at a catch weight. In fact Alvarez is only 22 years old and still hasn’t grown yet and developed he’s man strength. Will beating both Martinez and Golovkin add to Mayweather’s legacy? Probably not, they will always be individuals who find something which will degrade the (potential) victories against Martinez and Golovkin.

Froch vs. Groves?

The IBF wants it, Groves wants it but do you want it? Groves is unbeaten and he’s biggest victory comes against James Degale, however after defeating a game but faded Glen Johnson I thought Groves would be stepping up against more quality opposition. He hasn’t done that yet and a bout with Froch just seems to rushed. It wasn’t too long ago Groves was sporting a black eye after sparring Andre Dirrell so I think it would be better for Groves to face a top 10 super middleweight first to iron out any weaknesses in he’s boxing ability , maybe Oosthuizen, Edwin Rodriguez or Sakio Bika? Froch can look towards Germany to face the WBO champion Robert Stieglitz to add another title before a Groves bout.

Martinez eyeing Cotto?

Interesting news, could Martinez cash out by facing Miguel Cotto? There are rumors that this bout could be made for spring 2014, while we all want Martinez to face GGG, he could make more money in a much more winnable bout against the smaller Miguel Cotto, but would you want to pay to watch this?

Good luck for David Price “redemption” rematch against Thompson this Saturday, anything but a KO victory for Price maybe seen by some as a fail.

Finally readers I have a question, after GGG performance how do you think GGG would fair against Andre Ward (remember GGG is a former Olympic medalist so he does have a good boxing pedigree)?
