Pacquiao says he was knocked out by a “Lucky punch,” doesn’t see himself as washed up

pac89By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao finally got around to responding to Floyd Mayweather Jr’s comments on his recent press tour about Pacquiao being a “Has-been” fighter. Manny says he’s not a has-been and that was knocked out by a lucky punch thrown by Juan Manuel Marquez.

Pacquiao said to Abs-Cbnnews, “To us, he [Mayweather] sounds cocky. He’s all talk. Why not stop the talk and say ‘let’s fight’ instead? I’m not a has-been, I can still win fights. I lost because I took a hit. I wasn’t beaten up… it was just a lucky punch, which is part of the game.”

Mayweather Jr. isn’t going to fight Manny, not with him having lost his last two fights and possibly heading for his 3rd straight defeat against Brandon Rios on November 23rd in Macao, China.

It’s up to Pacquiao to prove he’s not a has-been fighter and the only way he can do that is to beat Rios in a convincing fashion and get back in the ring quickly and beat some other top fighters in the sport as quickly as possible.

It’s got to be quick because Mayweather only has 4 fights remaining in his 6-fight contract with Showtime/CBS, and he plans on retiring once his contract ends unless he gets a big fight offer.

Pacquiao was knocked out cold by Marquez last December, and it wasn’t a lucky punch like Pacquiao says. Marquez had already proven earlier in the fight that he could knock Pacquiao down by dropping him in the 3rd round.

It was only a matter of time before he knocked him down again and that opportunity presented itself in the 6th when Marquez backed up against the ropes and waited for Pacquiao to charge him like he’d been doing for the past two rounds. Marquez expertly landed a crushing right hand to the head of Pacquiao and the shot knocked the Filipino out. There was no luck involved.

I hope Pacquiao isn’t going to call it a lucky punch if Rios knocks him cold on November 23rd. There’s only so many times you can use that excuse before the boxing public stops believing it.
