Molina destroys Bey in 10th

bey22By Jim Dower: #6 IBF lightweight contender John Molina (26-3, 21 KO’s) came from behind to get a 10th round stoppage win over the much faster Mickey Bey (18-1-1, 9 KO’s) at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

Things were looking pretty bleak for Molina going into the 10th round, but he was able to hurt Bey with a big left hand bomb. After Molina had Bey hurt, he flurried on him until the fight was halted by the referee at 2:01 of the round. Bey needed to play it safe in the 10th, but instead of elected to trade with Molina and it cost him the fight.

Molina, 30, came into the fight having lost two out of his last three fights. Molina had been stopped in the 1st round by Antonio DeMarco and defeated by Andrey Klimov in losing a 10 round majority decision.

Despite losing the fight, Bey showed a lot of potential. If Floyd Mayweather Sr. can teach him to keep his guard up and defend himself better, Bey could end up as a world champion in the near future. Molina would have lost tonight by a lopsided decision if Bey’s defense was better. He made mistakes by fighting with his back against the ropes and by keeping his guard down. These are things that can be fixed, but he’s going to have to listen to what Mayweather Sr. is telling him in between rounds because it looked like the information he was getting from Floyd Sr. was going in one ear and out the other with not applying any of it.

Floyd Jr. would have listened and applied what his father was saying had that been him in the ring with Molina. Of course, it’s doubtful that Floyd Sr. would have had to keep telling him to keep his guard up to block Molina’s left hand shots, because Floyd Jr. would have instinctively known what to do in order to take away Molina’s left hand. Bey didn’t know or was too lazy to hold up his right hand to protect himself.

At 30, he needs to start fighting on more regular basis against better opposition. Bey took a huge step up tonight against what is pretty much just a gate keeper in Molina. Had Bey been fighting better opposition for the past 4 years, this would have been easy fight. You have to remember that Bey has been a pro since 2005, but he’s faced incredibly weak opposition all those years until tonight. This was Bey’s first contender and he wasn’t ready for the jump up as we saw.

In other action, super middleweight Badou Jack (15-0, 10 KO’s) defeated Farah Ennis (21-3, 12 KO’s) by a lopsided 10 round unanimous decision. The final judges’ scores were 100-90, 98-92 and 98-92. Jack needs a lot of work on his defense and power if he wants to do anything in the 168 lb. division. At 29, I can’t see him finding any power and his defense will likely continue to be a problem for him until he’s able to learn quickly.
