Mayweather: The Ultimate Test!

floyd300By Tom Drury: Hype, Hype, and Hype; that is what surrounds WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s). The hype is now over and the time has come to see if Saul Alvarez is as “special” as the boxing world believes. Alvarez in my opinion is not special. However, he is a world class fighter. Nothing in Alvarez’s style or career has made me or many boxing enthusiasts believe he is the guy to dethrone Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s). Josesito Lopez, Austin Trout, Matthew Hatton and Ryan Rhodes are not the kind of opposition that prepare you for a fight against greatness (Mayweather).

Another point I will make; Mayweather beat Shane Mosley and Manny Paquiao beat Shane Mosley. Canelo’s job was not to beat Shane Mosley but to beat him by doing something they couldn’t. That did not happen. In truth, Shane Mosley had more success against Alvarez than he did against both Mayweather and Pacquiao.

Alvarez is too green for this fight and will not taste success. Mayweather will become the teacher in this fight and school Alvarez all night, as James Toney said in a recent interview on www.youtube.com (ES News) “this fight is high paid sparring for Mayweather.” James Toney without doubt talks a lot of garbage but this time he is bang on the money.

Alvarez unfortunately hasn’t done anything in the ring that other fighters haven’t and that is a fact. Fans especially, forget the circumstances Floyd Mayweather has fought under. Mayweather throughout his career has never entered the ring at an advantage. Arguably against Juan Manuel Marquez, Mayweather had an advantage, but the fight wouldn’t have turned out different. If you think it would have its time to look for a new sport to follow. The Oscar De La Hoya fight was Mayweather’s first step up in weight to 154lbs, yet Mayweather came into the fight at 150lbs. De La Hoya outweighed him by 10lbs on the night of the fight coming in at 161lbs after rehydration.

Ricky Hatton, undefeated and coming off a win, Victor Ortiz, coming off a great win against Andre Berto in fight of the year, Miguel Cotto, coming off a win, Robert Guerrero, coming off a win, Shane Mosley, now this one really gets to me, Shane Mosley gave the man most claim Mayweather ducked (Antonio Margarito) the beat-down of a lifetime and was coming off that stellar performance when taking the Mayweather fight. These facts escape the fans attention but the pattern is there to see. Not only is he beating fighters who are coming off wins, good wins and carrying great confidence, he is doing what has never been done; schooling these world class fighters, knocking them out, playing them at there own game, out-thinking them, outsmarting them, outworking them, turning there positives into negatives.

Mayweather is the greatest boxer of all time, Saul Alvarez is still serving an apprenticeship. Don’t jump the gun in thinking Alvarez can even compete with Mayweather let alone be victorious.
