Mayweather-Canelo, “The One” – My prediction

floyd#001By Paul Walsh: When the announcement was made for Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez I couldn’t contain my excitement.  Finally a fight the fans want to see.  The two biggest and best names in the sport putting their unbeaten records on the line for the coveted crown of pound for pound king.  It has all the makings of a classic.

Many of you did not expect Mayweather to take this fight so soon into his 6 fight deal with CBS as he has a reputation of “ducking” opponents, case in point would be Manny Pacquiao.  Mayweather however would argue that he made the right decision based on Pacquiao’s last two outings but no one can say the same about this fight with Canelo.   Canelo has been built up as the next Mexican great and a lot of people would argue he is already the true P4P king so the fact that Mayweather is taking this fight now proves that he is not afraid to fight the best.

After following the ten city tour in America closely I noticed a change in the demeanor of Mayweather compared to his recent fights.  He was not his usual calm and relaxed-self, he seemed a lot more agitated this time round.  Whether this was him being genuinely worried about his opponent or him feeling as though people think he still has something to prove I’m not sure.  The presence of Oscar De La Hoya has visible annoyed him.  Oscar has been more prominent than usual which has affected Mayweather and has only highlighted the disdain both men have for each other.  There is no love lost between these two future hall of famers as the wounds have never really healed from their epic battle.  The fact that De La Hoya is resting all his hopes on Canelo to finally be the man to take away that “0” from Mayweather is further adding fuel to the fire.

As far as the fight goes itself I cannot see past Mayweather.  Yes, Canelo is the up and coming young, strong, hungry champion but I really cannot see anyone beating Mayweather.  I believe he is levels above every fighter in the world and there is no one out there who will be able to beat him.  Canelo will make it competitive as he is brilliant thinker in the ring and he will be able to change the game plan if it is not working.  He is also naturally bigger and is quick so he can use that to his advantage but the one thing he does lack is experience.  This is likely to play a big part on the night and Mayweather has been there and done that, this just another day at the office for him.  I expect the fight to go the distance with a unanimous points win for Mayweather.  We could even see a repeat of the Mayweather vs Marquez fight simply because I think Floyd has got his hunger back and he really wants to showcase his skills and let everyone know who the boss is.

The good thing for Canelo is he is still young and he will have lost to the best so he will have enough time to recover and come back from this.  I expect Canelo to take over the throne as P4P king once Mayweather retires so I am glad he will get the chance to share the ring with him.

This promises to be the best and biggest fight (financially) in the last decade.  It will shatter all PPV records and only enhance the bank balance of “money” Mayweather.  September 14th cannot come soon enough.
