Mayweather-Canelo: A Super Fight Should Have A Super Card

canelo400By Chester Rivers: On September 14, many of us will call our network provider and order the super fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s). The fight is expected to do record numbers in PPV buys. At $65.00 per order, the promoters of this fight should to the right thing and give the fans a super card.

Golden Boy could capitalize on the massive media attention by promoting some of their best yet unpopular fighters.

A rematch between Danny Garcia vs. Amir Khan would be a very exciting bout. Before most of you yell for Lucas Matthysse let me explain. Matthysse is one of boxing’s hottest commodities. Putting Lucas on the under card is too risky. People would pay to watch him fight because of his crowd pleasing knock out power. Garcia is a power punching world champ @ 140 but has a small following.

He originally won his title by knocking out Khan. Amir on the other hand has a huge following, a wealth of boxing talent and a glass jaw. This fight has all the ingredients for Fight of The Year, and with over 2 million pair of eyes watching, the boxing public will instantly make demands for the winner to face Matthysse in early 2014.

Another smart match up would be Erislandy Lara vs. Austin Trout. Why is this smart? Both guys campaign @ 154 the same as Canelo. Canelo’s future win or lose is probably middleweight. The 154 pound division, needless to say, is very weak. The winner of this fight will instantly be elevated as the king of the hill for a very long time.

Abner Mares vs Guillermo Rigondeaux: I know Rigondeaux is promoted by Top Rank but Bob Arum has stated he cannot market Rigondeaux. It has also been reported HBO has rejected Arum’s proposals to televise any of Rigondeaux’s fights. This fight is a win/win situation for both promoters. The offensive minded Mares vs.the defensive Rigondeaux would be a classic battle of styles.

Without a super card, this fight is still going to sell. We as paying customers should demand that our voices be heard through our dollars. For too long professional sports has fed the general public crumbs while they ate cake. Golden Boy should do the right thing and give the boxing public a great card worthy of the $65.00 fee.
