Canelo y Canelitos(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten heavyweight contender Malik Scott sees WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) as a fighter that is physically made for Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) to dominate and beat him with ease on September 14th. Scott thinks Canelo is a great fighter, but only great against other fighters, not against Mayweather.

Scott said to esnewsreporting “This fight is such a given. I believe this can be one of Floyd’s finest masterpieces. Canelo’s style of made for Floyd. You know they got a lot of hype about him [Canelo]. He’s a good fighter; he’s a super star, but Floyd is a pugilistic specialist. I think it’s an easy fight for Floyd.”

I think I have to agree with Scott on this one. Canelo is made for Mayweather with his plodding, flat-footed fighting style. Canelo is like Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero without the work rate and the ability to make the same kind of adjustments.

I rate Guerrero as a better overall fighter than Canelo. I see Canelo as the stronger and obviously the much heavier fighter compared to Guerrero, but definitely not a better fighter than him. I see Mayweather having an easier time against Canelo than he did against Guerrero, and that was an easy fight for Mayweather.

I’m not sure what physically is wrong with Canelo that prevents him from fighting harder than 45 second to 1 minute of every round, but I think it might have to do with Canelo’s weight. He’s got to be killing himself trying to drain down to fight at 154 when he weighs more than Gennady Golovkin, the WBA middleweight champion. I think Canelo’s stamina problems may disappear once he stops taking off 15-18 pounds of water weight to get down to junior middleweight for his fights.

If Canelo moves up to middleweight or super middleweight, I bet he finds that he has a lot more energy and fight a lot harder. Taking off all that water and then putting it back on within 24 hours has got to be really difficult for Canelo’s body. He should move up in weight and start fighting guys his own size at 160, 168 or 175. Those would be better divisions for Canelo physically.
