Maidana: Has anyone heard from Adrien Broner?

broner6534By Allan Fox: #2 WBA, Marcos Maidana (34-3, 31 KO’s) is wondering what happened with WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s), because he seems to be missing in action after struggling to beat WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi last month by a 12 round split decision in Brooklyn, New York.

Maidana wants to face Broner, or know whether he’s going to vacate the title or not. Broner has been busy on his twitter account, but he’s gone quiet about what his intentions are about future fights.

Maidana said on his twitter, “Have anyone heard about Adrien Broner lately? 147 lbs or running? Just wondering. Let’s get this straight with Broner. If he doesn’t wanna fight me he quits the WBA title and I’ll take care of his rap record.”

Broner said after his win over Malignaggi that he wanted to capture other world titles and he said he wouldn’t be ruling out fighting at 140, 135 or 130.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer wanted to match Broner up against Maidana next, and he said he was hoping to put that fight together after meeting with Maidana’s manager. But it doesn’t look that’s happened otherwise Maidana wouldn’t be asking where Broner is.

Broner isn’t going to be able to avoid guys Maidana, Keith Thurman or Diego Chaves for long if he wants to keep the WBA title. He might be able to get in a couple of optional title defenses, but he’s going to have to face one of those three fighters and it’s going to be tough on him.

Those guys are bigger than him and they have equal to better power than Broner. But what makes Thurman, Maidana and Chaves difficult for a fighter like Broner is that they throw a lot of punches. They have high work rate and they’d put Broner in a situation where he couldn’t sit back with his shoulder roll defense beat them by throwing pot shots.

A fighter like Floyd Mayweather Jr. could beat them, but he’s faster on his feet and has better hand speed. Broner is more flat-footed and he’d be forced to go toe-to-toe with those guys and it might end badly for him if he doesn’t choose to vacate his WBA title or let the WBA strip him of the belt.
