brook23By Scott Gilfoid: #1 IBF 147 lb. contender Kell Brook (30-0, 20 KO’s) says there will be announcement about his next fight soon by his promoter Eddie Hearn.

Brook is supposed to be fighting a big name, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to be a real big name because Marcos Maidana is still looking to get a fight against Adrien Broner.

That tells me that he’s not in the running for Brook’s next fight, and it’s not likely that Hearn would ever put Brook in with a puncher like Keith Thurman. If you take away those two guys from the running for the fight, you’re looking at a lot flawed fighters at 147 that could be facing Brook.

Here are the best options for Brook:

Keith Thurman
Diego Chavez
Ruslan Provodnikov
Robert Guerrero
Victor Ortiz

Now here are the likely options that Hearn will be picking from for Brook:

Paulie Malignaggi
Kevin Bizier
Randall Bailey
Jessie Vargas
Luis Carlos Abregu
Ionut Dan Ion
Ed Paredes
Pablo Cesar Cano
Shane Mosley
Antonin Decarie
Vyacheslav Senchenko
Thomas Dulorme
Shawn Porter

Of the second category, the ones that to look at closely are the likes of Malignaggi, Bailey, Cano and Senchenko. I honestly think it’s going to be one of those guys that Hearn picks for Brook. I don’t see any risk taking on Hearn’s part as far as matching Brook, because that’s not been Hearn’s style when matching Brook. Hearn has opted for the safe fights to keep Brook from getting beaten, and even then he almost got beat by Carson Jones.

Instead of dangerous opponents for Brook, we’ve seen him fighting Carson Jones twice, Hector Saldivia, and Matthew Hatton under Hearn’s helm of match-making for Brook. Notice the pattern there? We’re talking safe fights to make Brook look good and keep him from getting beaten by one of the fighters from my list.

Hearn says that Brook will be fighting a big name for his next fight, but I translate that to be a big soft opponent rather than a big name. If it is going to be a big name, I think it’s going to be a big name from 4,000 yesterday’s ago like Mosley.
