Hughie Fury vs. Shane McPhilbin on September 14th

fury433By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten heavyweight prospect Hughie Fury (8-0, 5 KO’s) will be facing former British cruiserweight champion Shane McPhilbin (8-7, 5 KO’s) on September 14th at the Magna Centre, Rotherham, Yorkshire, UK.

As bad as McPhilbin’s record is in his six fights, if he lands one of his big right hands on Hughie’s chin, I can see the fight being over straightaway. Hughie would be out cold if he gets nailed flush by one of McPhilbin’s big right hand shots.

That’s why I expect Hughie to be taking no chances whatsoever in this fight by throwing mostly jabs and scurrying away each time McPhilbin even shows a hint that he might throw a punch.

This is an interesting bout because the immediate question you have to ask is why is the 6’6” Hughie fighting a cruiserweight with 5 defeats in his last 6 fights? That is the big question that pops into my mind.

I thought Hughie was looking to speed his career up so he can break Mike Tyson’s record by becoming the youngest fighter to win a heavyweight world title. If that’s what Hughie really plans on doing, then why is he fighting a cruiserweight with a bunch of losses in his last six fights? That’s very un-Mike Tyson like if you ask me.

About the only thing good I can say about this fight is that the 27-year-old McPhilbin can punch a little. However, the timing for the fight is bad given that McPhilbin has lost all those fights recently. I mean, I’d be okay with Hughie fighting a cruiserweight like McPhilbin if it occurred last year before he started losing repeatedly against all kinds of guys.

Look at the records of the fighters that McPhilbin has been getting beaten by lately: 5-0, 8-2, 8-0, and 11-2. That’s not too good, is it? I wouldn’t have mind seeing Hughie fight McPhilbin before his loss to Enzo Maccarinelli, but not anymore. McPhilbin has piled on too many defeats against novices since that loss, and now it’s not even interesting.

I’d like to see Hughie fight someone decent like Magomed Absualamov. That would be a good fight. It would be one of those sink or swim type bouts, but it would be good for Hughie’s career. At least Abduslamov is actually a heavyweight and not a cruiserweight.
