brook20By Scott Gilfoid: Kell Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn is saying that he’ll be announcing who Kell Brook’s next opponent will be this week when he meets with the media. Brook will be fighting in September and Hearn says he has a big name for Brook to fight. The big name is rumored to be 41-year-old Shane Mosley.

I’m going to be laughing like mad if Hearn’s big name turns out to be Brook. This is so classic for Brook as far as opponents go. We’ve seen him fight Matthew Hatton, who was supposed to be a big name. We’ve seen him fight 40-year-old Lovemore N’dou.

Brook fighting Mosley doesn’t surprise me. I could see that move from a mile away. I just don’t know how Hearn would be able to promote this fight with a straight face. How do you tell the public that Brook is going to fight Mosley. That’s supposed to be Brook’s big name?

I’m hoping that rumor is false Mosley is hardly a big name anymore unless Hearn is just counting on his name as being enough of an attractant to get casual boxing fans who don’t have much of a clue about the sport to tune in and watch Brook beat up on a past his best Mosley.

If Mosley is going to be the guy, Hearn will be able to point to his #5 ranking by the WBA and WBC to justify his pick. However, I think that ranking is ridiculous, because Mosley has only one victory in the last four years. How do you rank Mosley at number #5 when he only 1 win in the last 4 years. I know it’s difficult fathom any fighter getting a number 5 ranking with only one win in four years.

Mosley won his last fight against 2nd tier fighter Pablo Cesar Cano last May by a narrow 12 round unanimous decision, but that was a very, very close fight, and Cano isn’t wasn’t even ranked in the top 15 by any of the sanctioning bodies, so how was Mosley given a #5 ranking off of a win over Cano? That’s weird.

Cano is the guy that both Erik Morales and Paulie Malignaggi beat. That’s enough of a reason for me not to give Mosley a top 15 ranking even with his win over Cano. Mosley should have at least had to prove that he can beat a top 10 contender before he got an inflated ranking like the one he has now by the WBA and WBC.
