By B.G.B: Based on last weekends action, the question on every boxing fan’s mind right now is where does Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) go after his demolition job of tough middleweight contender Matthew Macklin (29-5, 20 KO’s)? Throughout the 3 rounds of the bout, Golovkin demonstrated frightful power along with patience, poise, accuracy and a solid defense.
As the hype grows, the opponents improve (or so they should), and although fans around the world would dream of seeing ‘GGG’ face the likes of Martinez, Alvarez, Froch and Ward next, those fights are not likely to materialize any time soon. One fight I would like to see that has a very realistic possibility of being made is ‘GGG’ v Martin Murray (27-25, 11 KO’s). Here’s why:
Fans are all now aware of the very real possibility that Gennady Golovkin is on the verge of taking the middleweight division by storm showcasing himself as a truly elite champion. All he needs to do is keep doing what he’s doing; Knocking fighters out until he gets to the top. However this is boxing, and Knocking opponents out isn’t quite enough these days to land the big fights. Golovkin needs to sell himself as a potential PPV star because none of the top fighters are going to take such a risk unless the price is right. I would hope Golovkin’s next fight would be against Chaves Jr, but honestly, I cant see Chaves’ camp wanting anything to do with ‘GGG’. Here’s where Murray fits in.
Martin Murray is coming off a decision loss to the widely regarded best middleweight in the world Sergio Martinez in front of the champions home crowd. For me, Murray dominated the fight, landing the cleaner more hurtful shots of the two resulting in dropping Martinez twice (only one was counted) and I personally thought Murray had done more than enough to win the fight, however the judges saw it differently. What this fight did show us however is that Martinez is beginning to slow down, and that Murray is one of the best fighters in the division.
Murray is looking to prove his worth once again, and Golovkin needs exposure. Add the 2 together and the conclusion would be this: Golovkin v Murray in England. I believe Murray is a much tougher fight for Golovkin than Macklin, hes bigger, faster and more technically sound than Macklin, and has a great tight defense. Golovkin would need to work harder to trap Murray as he did with Macklin, and I believe this would be Golovkin’s toughest fight to date, although I would expect him to win, giving him great exposure to the UK public, and increasing his potential to become a PPV star, which is what he needs to land the big money fights that we all want to see.
