Golovkin moves to #1 in Ring ratings at 160

golovkin122By Allan Fox: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) moved from #2, behind Daniel Geale, to #1 in the Ring ratings after Golovkin’s 3rd round knockout win over Matthew Macklin last Saturday night. Geale slides down to the #2 spot in the ratings.

The current Ring champion is WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez. That’s a rating that probably needs to be adjusted, though, because a lot has changed since Martinez’s win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. last September, as Martinez looked poor in his first bout since that fight against Martin Murray last April.

Martinez was lucky to get the win in that fight, and you can’t deny that he’s starting to show his age in a big way with the injuries and lack of power.

In the Macklin fight, Golovkin looked much better than Sergio did in beating the same fighter. You can kind of give Sergio a pass because of his age, but he shouldn’t be the Ring champion if he’s not fighting at the same level at the Golovkin is right now. That’s one of things I’ve noticed about the Ring’s ratings.

Once they have a guy rated highly, they tend to leave them there even when it’s clear they’re no longer the top guy. We saw that with the Ring ratings showing Bernard Hopkins as the top fighter when it was clear ages ago that Chad Dawson was the #1 fighter. Dawson is obviously no longer the #1 guy after losses to Andre Ward and Adonis Stevenson.

The current Ring ratings for middleweight are as follows:

Champion: Sergio Martinez
1. Gennady Golovkin
2. Daniel Geale
3. Felix Sturm
4. Peter Quillin
5. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
6. Martin Murray
7. Matthew Macklin
8. Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam
9. Darren Barker
10. Brian Vera

I don’t agree with those rankings. I think my rankings are little more realistic to what’s happening in the middleweight division:

Champion: Gennady Golovkin
1. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr
2. Peter Quillin
3. Sergio Martinez
4. Martin Murray
5. Brian Vera
6. Darren Barker
7. Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam
8. Felix Sturm
9. Daniel Geale
10. Matthew Macklin
