Garcia-Matthysse to have 3-city press tour for September 14th fight

garcia435By Dan Ambrose: To show how important the Danny Garcia (26-0, 14 KO’s) vs. Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s) is for the September 14th Floyd Mayweather Jr. – Saul “Canelo” Alvarez card, Matthysse and Garcia will have their own 3-city press tour visiting Los Angeles, Puerto Rico and New York.

Question: When was the last time you saw a co-feature bout have its own 3-city press tour? I’ve never seen it happen before, and that tells you how important this fight.

This fight in some ways is a better fight than the Mayweather-Canelo fight, because both guys are pretty evenly matched and weigh almost the same after they rehydrate. This isn’t a situation where one guy is fighting at a higher weight class and is going to rehydrate up 20 pounds after he barely makes the catch-weight.

Matthysse and Garcia will likely enter the ring on September 14th about the same weight. The experience between them is pretty close, and the power somewhat close. Garcia can punch with his left hand, and he’s got decent right hand power too. However, Matthysse has monstrous power with either hand and if he’s able to land his shots on Garcia, we could have a short fight.

Tickets for the Mayweather-Canelo fight on closed circuit have been going really quickly. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer wants to add an extra 20 thousand seats for the closed circuit telecast in Las Vegas, according to Dan Rafael.

Schaefer expects the live gate to be $19.5 million, and that’s going to be record. Not only is the gate going to be a record, but Schaefer sees the fight card as having an excellent chance of breaking the all-time PPV record of 2.4 million buys set by Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya in 2007. There were doubts that could happen until today with the addition of the Garcia-Matthysse fight to the Mayweather vs. Canelo card.
