Frampton battles Briceno, a super flyweight, on July 20th

frampton23By Scott Gilfoid: Rather than face someone from his own division, undefeated #3 IBF, #7 WBA, #7 WBC, #14 WBO, super bantamweight contender Carl Frampton will be dipping down two entire divisions to face 35-year-old non-top 15 ranked super flyweight Everth Briceno (35-8-2, 26 KO’s) on July 20th at the Wembley Arena, Wembley, in London, United Kingdom.

Frampton, 26, will be defending his IBF Inter-Continental super bantamweight strap in this fight against the much older 35-year-old Bricera, who has lost 3 out of his last 7 fights.

Interestingly enough, this fight is supposed to send a message from Frampton to #1 WBC, #4 IBF, #4 WBA, Leo Santa Cruz, but I’m not sure that he’s going to get that message. Even if Frampton does beat Bricero easily it won’t mean much because the 35 and was already beaten two years ago by Santa Cruz when he was fighting at bantamweight.

Santa Cruz beat a younger, better version of the Bricero that Frampton will be facing. To show this, Bricero immediately lost his next fight AFTER his loss to Santa Cruz, losing to Carlos Rueda (17-6-1, 14 KO’s) and then fighting him to a draw in his next fight. Briceno didn’t look like the same fighter that was able to go 11 rounds with Santa Cruz before getting stopped.

In Briceno’s last’s two fights he’s struggled to beat Elvis Guillen (7-9, 5 KO’s). So I say again; what kind of message is Frampton going to be sending to Santa Cruz if he beats Briceno other than the fact that Frampton is facing an older guy that fights two divisions below him.

Why isn’t Frampton fighting someone from his own division? If Frampton send a message to Santa Cruz, then why doesn’t he fight him? I don’t get this message sending bit. Frampton might as well get it over with and fight Santa Cruz because nothing is going to change a year or two from now.

Frampton can’t wait Santa Cruz out until he gets old because Santa Cruz is younger than Frampton at 24, so he might as well get it over with unless he doesn’t plan on fighting him, which wouldn’t surprise me in the least.

Frampton said “He [Briceno] also boxed Leo Santa Cruz who is a future rival of mine, so I aim to do a better job on him than Cruz did.”

Like I said, Santa Cruz beat Briceno two years ago in a fight where Santa Cruz gave Briceno a real beating. It’s on YouTube, and after that fight, Briceno was beaten by a guy with a mediocre record and BARELY beat a guy with a 7-9 record. Santa Cruz was a bantamweight when he fought the super flyweight Briceno.
