Floyd Mayweather Jr: Greatness!

mayweather3422By Tom Drury: Floyd Mayweather Jr, a phenomenon, pugilistic master, marketing genius, P4P best, undefeated and future hall of fame boxer. Time and time again I find myself defending the skills and prowess of a man who does not need defending.

Once again a recent article on this site wrote by lets say a devoted boxing follower to say the least, the article claims Floyd Mayweather is realizing his own fighting style is “boring” and he was pressured into fighting Saul “Canelo” Alvarez due to poor pay per view numbers in his last fight.

The article also resurrected the dated Manny Pacquiao episode. These claims are bordering on absolute ridiculousness and laughable.

After following boxing for many years and as a great follower of Floyd Mayweathers boxing journey it is beyond me how people can discredit and obscure the facts surrounding him. A boxing fan is a person who follows fighters in detail, they usually know there KO%, wins/losses, strengths/weaknesses and accolades they have received throughout there career while been able to make valid points backed up by facts.

one of the most recent interviews with the late Emmanuel Steward, this man without doubt is one of, if not the greatest trainer of all time. Steward has forgot more about boxing than the present fans, experts, fighters and trainers will ever know, he loved the amateur scene and dedicated his life to fighters from all walks of life, race, religion and age, most finding success under his expert eye in the legendary, basement KRONK gym in Detroit (USA), a place where only the strong and heartiest fighters ventured. Thomas “Hitman” Hearns, Lennox Lewis, Gerald Mclellan, Miguel Cotto, Naseem Hamed, Wladimir Klitshko among others all trained under the great Steward. Steward was asked what he thought about Floyd Mayweather? his reply, Quote “Floyd Mayweather is one of the greatest all round boxers I have ever seen”. That comment came after the fight with Miguel Cotto.

Manny Pacquiao: This episode and debate is dead in the water, it no longer holds any weight and Paquiao has diminished as a threat to Mayweather. Mayweather made a comment about Paquiao in his latest press conference for his upcoming fight on the 14 sep with Saul Alvarez. Mayweather said “Pacquiao is a has-been” is this not true? Paquiao has lost his last two fights, the first against a very average, mediocre fighter Timothy Bradley and the most recent against a modern day great Juan Manuel Marquez in a savage KO defeat, this defeat was no surprise to the boxing fan, Marquez had Paquiaos number for years and was always the superior fighter. Paquiaos next challenge is against the durable, hard-hitting Brandon “Bam-Bam” Rios, do not hold your breath for a Pacquiao win. I myself do believe in 2010 Paquiao would have provided Mayweather with a competitive challenge, by know means do I believe he could ever win, what I believe is back then Pacquiao was performing with an intense work rate and punch output he would have been the only man with a slight chance of making Mayweather fight. Unfortunately for the fans and boxing world Pacquiao and his team deemed it more beneficial to refuse a simple RBT request than take home a $40,000,000 payday and test there skills/game plan against the worlds best.

Mayweathers resume is second to none, take into consideration he is undefeated, it makes that resume “Great”. Just to Name a few Mayweather victories Castillo (twice), the undefeated KO artist Diego Corales, Mexican legend and all time great Juan Manuel Marquez, undefeated British fighter Ricky Hatton, multiple world champion and fan favorite Oscar De La Hoya, the slick Zab Judah, Multiple world champion and future hall of famer “Sugar” Shane Mosley, Puerto Rican legend Miguel Cotto. The fact surrounding these fights are all these men were at there best and Mayweather never entered the ring at an advantage, arguably against Juan Manuel Marquez but when you shut out and take apart one of the most technically gifted fighters in the game after a 2 year sabbatical like Mayweather did, you realize your dealing with a special talent. Before your usual reaction of Shane Mosley was over the hill and Juan Manuel Marquez was a blown up lightweight, think about what you are saying Mosley had just gave one of his life best performances against Antonio Margarito it was purely a demolition job. Juan Manuel Marquez looked more like an amateur than the world class operator we know he is, would the outcome be different today? I think not!.

Floyd Mayweather is as near to unbeatable as a fighter can be, his belief in his skills is undeniable and proven in every fight, Mayweather is not been pressured to fight Saul Alvarez, Mayweather is boxing and quite frankly runs the show when it comes to his career. Alvarez has not been chosen to bring in more ppv numbers either, it just happens that Alvarez has a huge fan-base. Alvarez was chosen because Mayweather is a fighting man it runs in his blood and has for generations the Mayweather name lives, eats and sleeps boxing. There is no doubt in my mind Mayweather will beat Alvarez and quite easily, he will not give Alvarez any more respect than he did Cotto, Mosley, Hatton, De La Hoya and Juan Manuel Marquez I guarantee that.

The thing is Mayweather will very likely end his career undefeated, there isn’t a serious challenge out there for him in the weight class he occupies, maybe the Mayweather nay sayers should start calling for fights with Adonis Stevenson, Gennady Golovkin, Carl Froch, Andre Ward even the Klitschko brothers because that is the only chance Mayweather has of defeat.

The true boxing fan count down the days before a Mayweather contest, to witness the raw boxing talent and skill on show every time Mayweather enters the ring, the masterful shoulder roll, the check hooks, lead right hands, rolling with the punches, the scientific footwork, adjustments only Mayweather can make, counter-punching prowess, accuracy and the ability to take every positive his opponent entered the ring with and turn it into a negative. To not enjoy and appreciate this talent “you don’t know boxing” and would be more suited to following MMA. I’m sure I speak for many when I say it is a pleasure to have witnessed the Floyd Mayweather journey and the god given talent he possesses and the journey has not ended. I look forward to writing a Floyd Mayweather victory article on Sep 14, see you then.
