Duran: Canelo must take Mayweather’s jab away from him on September 14th

Mayweather arrives(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: The great Roberto Duran has some advice for the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) to beat Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) in their fight on September 14th. Duran thinks Canelo should stay calm, not get upset by Mayweather, and focus on taking his jab away from him. Once he’s done that, Duran think the 23-year-old Canelo should pressure Mayweather.

In other words, try and do what every opponent that faces Mayweather attempts to do but fails.

Duran said to ESPN as quoted by tvn-t.com, “The first thing to do for Canelo is to take the match calmly because Mayweather is going to try to rile him. Do not lose your brain and try to be rough. You have to eliminate his jab, because when you take it away you will then put pressure on him.”

The problem with Duran’s advice is that it only works on guys that stand in one place and don’t have the sense enough to move once Canelo gets past their jab. It takes a primitive opponent not to be smart enough to realize that they can’t stand and trade with a guy that out-weighs them by 20 pounds or more the way that the 170+ Canelo does.

Mayweather isn’t going to stop and stand still for Canelo to hit him, and he’s not going to lay on the ropes and wait for Canelo to come beat him up. Mayweather is going to move and nail the slow-footed, flat-footed Canelo with shots while he’s on the move. Canelo can’t fight on the move. He’s just like Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in that respect.

Canelo needs his opponents to stand there so he can fight flat-footed in front of them and load up with his shots. This is obviously the style that Canelo was brought up with in Mexico, and it’s the style that works over there. Unfortunately that style doesn’t work against a modern fighter like Mayweather, and he’s not going to let Canelo set his feet to land up with his shots.

Canelo trying to fight on the move is like taking a fish out of water and expecting it to thrive. Canelo doesn’t throw with power while on the move and he turns red in the face when he has to do any kind of movement the ring. The stamina is lacking with Canelo.
