Diego Chaves will give Keith Thurman problems

thurman43By Allan Fox: Unbeaten Keith “One Time” Thurman (20-0, 18 KO’s) is going to have to be on the top of his game this Saturday night in his match-up against #1 WBA, Diego Chaves (22-0, 18 KO’s) in their Showtime televised fight at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Thurman has been saying for well over a year now that he’s ready to fight and beat the best at 147. He’s going to get a chance to prove that he’s for real against the hard hitting Chaves.

Chaves has excellent power, and he’s a lot like Saul “Canelo” Alvarez with his fighting style. He’s got knockout power in both hands, and a vicious right uppercut that he likes to throw. He’s knocked his last three opponents out in three rounds or less, and he seems to be still improving at 27. Chaves looks like a stronger version of Marcos Maidana.

Thurman, 24, has excellent power of his own, and he’s usually eager to display his power early in his fights. It’s going to be interesting to see if he’ll do that on Saturday night against Chaves, because if he slugs with the Argentinian fighter, he’s going to have to be able to take his big shots.

We don’t know how good Thurman’s chin is at this point because he’s not faced anyone that you could call a good fighter. He’s been matched pretty softly with the exception of his recent fight against Jan Zaveck last March.

Thurman will have a slight height advantage over Chaves, but not enough to make any real difference. The winner of this fight will come down to power, chin and heart. Both guys seem to have both in abundance, but one of them will come out of Saturday’s fight with their record no longer unblemished. It could be Thurman if he makes the mistake of trying to trade with Chaves.
