Devon Alexander will destroy Khan, says Cunningham

khan3334By Scott Gilfoid: Kevin Cunningham, the trainer for IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander (25-1, 14 KO’s), believes his fighter will KO former IBF/WBC light welterweight champion Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) when and if they face each other in December like what’s being talked about.

Cunningham says there is no deal yet for Alexander to face Khan in December, but he thinks it’s going to happen. Khan needs that fight to redeem himself for his 4th round knockout loss to Danny Garcia last July because Khan doesn’t anything to make boxing fans forget about that loss.

Khan also needs the IBF strap to make a fight between him and WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. seem more legitimate to casual boxing fans of the sport, who might feel kind of weird about purchasing a pay per view fight involving a fighter with 2 losses in his last 4 fights like Khan has.

Without a win over Alexander, Khan vs. Mayweather is probably PPV poison along the same lines as Mayweather vs. Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, only worse because Khan doesn’t have even the fan base that Guerrero has in the U.S.

Cunningham said to RingTV “If it does happen, I think that Devon is going to destroy Khan, and he’s going to look spectacular doing it…[Khan] seems really confused…he throws a lot of fast, meaningless punches…I think he’s [Alexander] going to give Khan problems…I think that he’s just going to punish him.”

I don’t see Alexander punishing Khan, because that would mean that Khan would have to be around for long time for the punishment to take place. I think once Alexander lands a fast, hard shot in between one of Khan’s meaningless combinations, we’ll see Khan hit the deck and get knocked out.

Look at Khan’s last fight against past his best former IBF lightweight champion Julio Diaz last April. Diaz dropped Khan in the 4th round and was able to hurt him badly several times in the remaining 8 rounds of the fight. Khan was lucky to survive the 11th round against Diaz because he was badly hurt. That was against a way past his best Diaz.

Now imagine what a prime Alexander will do to Khan in December. It’s going to be over quickly with Alexander knocking Khan out and removing any chances of him EVER fighting Mayweather. It’ll be kind of sad in a way because Khan has been talking about wanting to fight Mayweather for the past three years, and now all chances of that fight ever happening would be permanently finished.

Mayweather won’t be fighting long enough to wait for Khan to redeem himself from yet another loss. I don’t even know how Khan could redeem himself. The only fighters that he can redeem himself against are good ones and those guys would all have a good chance to beat him.
