De La Hoya wants Golovkin to fight N’Dam to test how good he is

ndam324By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya wants WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) to be tested against former WBO middleweight champion Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam (27-1, 17 KO’s) for some reason.

De La Hoya doesn’t say why he wants Golovkin to face N’Dam. He just threw out there without giving an explanation, such as saying he wants to match Golovkin vs. Golden Boy fighter Peter Quillin.

De La Hoya said on his social media site “I wanna see Golovkin vs. Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam and then I’ll see if he’s good or not.”

De La Hoya was raked over the coals by people on twitter over that comment, because he should have sense enough to see how good Golovkin is by watching him destroy guys like Matthew Macklin.

Showing his preference for his own fighter, De La Hoya said “Hey KidChocolate, how does it feel to be the best middleweight on the planet? My man KidChocolate will destroy any middleweight out there.”

If that’s true then De La Hoya needs to take the training wheels off of him and start putting him in with good opposition because matching him against guys Fernando Guerrero, Jason LeHoullier, and a past his best Winky Wright, just looks like De La Hoya is being very careful with his matchmaking with Quillin for fear he’ll get beaten. Quillin looked vulnerable in his win over N’Dam.

At times, Quillin looked good, but when N’Dam was letting his hands go, Quillin was getting tagged and he’d stop throwing punches. Quillin really struggled at times against N’Dam.

If De La Hoya really wanted to find out how good Golovkin is he’d be courageous and let Quillin fight him. I don’t think De La Hoya is going to let Quillin ever face Golovkin while he’s still in his prime. De La Hoya might choose to wait Golovkin out until he starts showing signs of aging, and then put Quillin in with him.

The problem with strategy is that Golovkin’s power will likely still be there, as well as his good inside fighting ability. Even at 40, I can see Golovkin tearing Quillin apart on the inside and knocking him out with a body shot. Quillin has zero skills on the inside and he mostly just throws pot shots from the outside. He seems to rely on power only, and doesn’t have the attributes that the other middleweight champions have like Sergio Martinez, Golovkin and Daniel Geale.

De La Hoya has the power to make a fight between Quillin and Golovkin, but it looks like he doesn’t want that fight.
