Cleverly: Froch knows I’d beat him

froch7By Scott Gilfoid: WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (26-0, 12 KO’s) thinks IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (31-2, 22 KO’s) is only interested in facing guys moving up from middleweight, such as Gennady Golovkin, or guys from his own weight class rather than facing someone like himself in the weight class just above him at 175.

Cleverly doesn’t think that’s too cool, Froch willing to fight a guy in a lower weight class but against someone in a higher weight class.

Cleverly said to The Sun “He’s [Froch] only interested in staying at super middleweight and fighting smaller guys coming up to his weight. I’d beat Carl Froch. He knows that and that’s why he’s gone quiet as a mouse about the fight.”

I agree with Cleverly. I think he would beat Froch, and I have a feeling that Froch might be thinking the same thing because you would think he would have fought Cleverly ages ago if he saw this as a winnable fight for him. Froch jumped at the chance to fight Yusaf Mack, and that was a very winnable fight for Froch, yet he’s not fighting Cleverly.

Whatever the case it might not matter that Froch isn’t showing any interest in fighting Cleverly, because Cleverly has a fight next month against unbeaten Sergey Kovalev (21-0-1, 19 KO’s) in Wales, and if Cleverly gets starched out like I think he will, Froch will have the only excuse he needs to put Cleverly on permanent ignore.

A knockout loss for Cleverly against Kovalev will finish any thought of Cleverly getting a fight against Froch, because he’ll be able to bring up the fact that he was knocked out by Kovalev each time Cleverly opens his yap to try and get a fight against him. It’s about match-ups.

I think Cleverly would beat Froch, but lose to Kovlaev because that guys has better power than Froch and he throws nonstop punches. Kovalev can throw with big power in close or on the outside; so it’s not as if Cleverly will be able to smother Kovalev the way that Andre Ward smothered Froch to beat him.
