Anthony Mundine vs. Shane Mosley possible for October

mosley4434By Dan Ambrose: 41-year-old Shane Mosley (47-8-1, 39 KO’s) has reportedly been given an offer of close to $1.5 million to travel to Australia to fight 38-year-old former WBA super middleweight champion Anthony Mundine (44-5, 26 KO’s) in October, according to news.com.au.

If Mundine loses the fight, he says he’s going to retire from boxing. It’s not likely that Mundine will lose the fight, because he’s going to have a huge height and weight advantage over the soon to be 42-year-old Mosley.

Mundine is fighting at middleweight now, but he’s still pretty much a super middleweight in size at 5’11”. He’s come down in weight with the hopes that he can work his way into a big fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr., but that appears to be little more than a pipe dream at best.

It’s surprising that Mundine is still holding out hopes to get Mayweather in the ring, because that’s just not likely to happen in this lifetime.

Mundine said to News.com.au “I’m looking to fight Shane Mosley, and if I lost that, yeah, I’ll call it a day…still want to knock ‘em all over until I reach Floyd Mayweather, but for that to happen I can’t afford to lose.”

I think Mosley is about as close to Mayweather as Mundine is ever going to get because Mayweather isn’t going to use up one of his last fights facing a guy that U.S casual boxing fans have never heard of. Mayweather couldn’t sell a pay per view bout against Mundine on Showtime to U.S fans because few people would be interested in such a fight.

Besides that, Mundine is huge in size and he doesn’t look like a middleweight. He looks like a super middleweight, and Mayweather has it bad enough fighting a guy as heavy as WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on September 14th. He doesn’t need to fight someone even heavier than Canelo in Mundine.
