Amir Khan and Devon Alexander heading towards Dubai on December 7th

khan53By Scott Gilfoid: IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander (25-1, 14 KO’s) recently said no to the idea of him defending his title against Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) in Dubai, but it looks like Alexander may have changed his mind about taking the fight there.

Khan says that Golden Boy Promotions is working on having the Khan-Alexander fight take place in Dubai rather than St. Louis, Alexander’s home city or Las Vegas, Nevada.

Khan said to The Sun “We discussed Dubai and put it on the table as my preferred option to Devon. He wasn’t sure at first and suggested Vegas. But negotiations are going right now. My dad and [Golden Boy Promotions CEO] Richard Schaefer are talking to the right people in Dubai.”

It looks like they have given Alexander a good offer to have the fight staged in Dubai, because I can’t see any reason why he would say yes to having the fight staged there. I mean, Khan will have a huge advantage when it comes to the crowd. That would be a pro-Khan crowd, and we’re talking cheering for his every miss and all that.

I wouldn’t agree to do it if I was Alexander unless they bumped up his cash to near double what he’s getting now, because he may need that extra cash if he ends up losing by a controversial decision.

He won’t have his IBF title anymore and it might take Alexander a while before he gets a chance to regain his belt or go after another world title. Unless Alexander has a rematch clause in his contract, I don’t see Khan giving him a rematch if he beats Alexander on December 7th. Khan doesn’t give rematches after he beats guys.

I don’t see how Alexander comes out ahead by taking the fight in Dubai. He’s still going to be taxed as the same rate as he would if the fight took place in the U.S, so there’s no advantage there.

I’m not sure about Khan though. He might get a big tax break by the fight not taking place in the U.S where the taxes tend to be higher. If that’s the case, then Alexander should ask for a lot more cash to agree to fighting Khan in Dubai because there’s no gain for him having the fight take place there rather than in the U.S.
