Wladimir-Povetkin agree to terms of contract for October 5th fight; waiting for WBA approval

wlad45By Eric Thomas: Bernd Boente, the manager for IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (60-3, 51 KO’s), is reporting that they’ve agreed to contract terms with WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (26-0, 18 KO’s) for a fight on October 5th at the Olimpiyskiy, in Moscow, Russia, according to boxingnews.com.ua.

The only thing that they’re waiting for now is the approval from the World Boxing Association. However, if the WBA stalls in making a decision or if they say no to the fight, then Wladimir will go ahead and fight someone else in September.

Wladimir and Povetkin have come close to fight on a couple of other occasions but the two have never been able to come together for one reason or another. This time, however, it looks like a real possibility that they’ll fight. There’s no reason for them not to because both will be getting a career high payday in this fight and it’s going to be a huge fight in Moscow.

The fight pits two former Olympic gold medalists against each other and that alone makes it an interesting fight. Povetkin is still unbeaten, but he’s been cleverly matched for much of his career and not faced guys that could potentially beat him like David Haye, Kubrat Pulev and the Klitschko brothers.

Povetkin has had the WBA title since beating Ruslan Chagaev to capture the vacant WBA title in August 2011. Povetkin hasn’t had any real tough match-ups since he picked up the WBA title aside from his fight against cruiserweight Marco Huck last year in February.

That should have been an easy fight for the 6’2” Povetkin, but he didn’t have the size to make it an easy fight, and he has to struggle to win by a 12 round majority decision. Povetkin is kind of a small heavyweight and he would have been better off fighting at cruiserweight than at heavyweight.
