By Eric Thomas: Welterweight Marcos Maidana (33-3, 30 KO’s) made weight today in coming in at 147 pounds for his big fight with Josesito Lopez (30-5, 18 KO’s) on Saturday night at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Lopez, a former light welterweight, came in at 145 lbs.

An emaciated looking Erislandy Lara (17-1-2, 11 KO’s) weighed in at 153.8, while his opponent Alfredo Angulo (22-2, 18 KO’) weighed in at 153 lbs. The Angulo-Lara fight will be the co-feature on the card and they’ll be fighting for the interim WBA junior middleweight title.

If Lara isn’t hurt by the weight loss he should be able to easily beat Angulo. He’s got the advantage in speed and boxing ability over the much slower Angulo. The only thing that Lara needs to worry about is not staying in one place for too long because Angulo has heavy hands and he’ll hurt him if given the chances.

Lara will also need to be careful about avoiding clinches with Angulo because he sometimes keeps punching when his opponents try to hold and he’s got good power in close.

A loss for Angulo will really hurt him because that would be his third defeat and it would be difficult for him to get back near another title shot. He might want to think about moving up to middleweight if he gets beaten because it’s difficult to imagine him having any lucky trying to get a title shot against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Maidana, #2 WBA, needs a win in this fight to stay in the hunt for a title shot against the WBA welterweight champion. Maidana will still have at least one, possibly two more fights to go before he’ll get a title shot after this fight. Golden Boy Promotions will likely put him in with the winner of the Keith Thurman vs. Diego Chaves fight if Maidana can get past Lopez on Saturday night.
