Toney: Mayweather’s going to knock Canelo out

canelo454By Dan Ambrose: Former three division world champion James “Lights Out” Toney thinks Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) will knock WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) in their fight on September 14th. Toney thinks Mayweather is too skilled for the 22-year-old Canelo. Toney likes Canelo a lot as a fighter, but he doesn’t see him having the experience at this point in his career to beat Mayweather.

Toney said to esnewsreporting.com “Mayweather’s going to knock him out. He’s getting a high paid sparring partner. Alvarez is too stupid to pace himself. Alvarez’s going to get knocked out. A million-five Mexicans going to go home crying.”

Toney sees the Mayweather-Canelo fight bringing in really big pay per view numbers, but at the end of the day he sees Mayweather is way too good for Canelo right now. If the fight were to take place in 2 years, Canelo would have a chance but with Mayweather still having a lot left in his prime, he’s probably too good for Canelo to cope with.

I definitely agree with Toney about Mayweather beating Canelo. I’m not too sure about him knocking Canelo out, but I can see him really giving Canelo a boxing lesson in this fight, especially when Canelo starts gassing out by the 5th round. That’s when he started tiring in his last fight against Austin Trout. Canelo was able to get plenty or rust breaks from the 4th round on because of the open scoring which revealed two of the judges’ lopsided scoring in his favor.

I think Canelo will likely try and take a lot of breaks against Mayweather due to his poor stamina and that’ll end up costing him the fight with him getting beaten by a lopsided decision.

I do agree with Toney about Canelo’s stamina problems. I don’t think he runs out of gas because he’s not pacing himself. I see it as a problem with Canelo’s conditioning period. I don’t think he can fight hard enough to beat a fighter like Mayweather without gassing out.
