Sulaiman sees Mayweather-Canelo fight going to a decision

floyd93By Dan Ambrose: World Boxing Council President Jose Sulaiman doesn’t see there being a knockout in the September 14th fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) and WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Sulaiman sees the fight ending by a decision, but he fails to see which fighter will come out on top.

Sulaiman said to deportes.univision “I do not think the fight will be decided by knockout. I think it will go to a decision. Both fighters endure, resist, hit hard, but don’t have overwhelming power and come well prepared to put up a fight that could go 12 rounds because of the style of the two. Saul Alvarez is a great champion and is improving in every fight.”

I think it’s a no-brainer that the fight ends by a decision because Canelo really isn’t a good knockout puncher despite having a resume that is littered with knockouts.

The guys that Canelo was able to knockout didn’t have good mobility and fought stupid fights against him by standing in one place the whole time and making it really easy for him.

I don’t see that Canelo improved much from the way he fought two years ago. If you watch Canelo in his fight against welterweight Matthew Hatton in their fight in 2011, it pretty much the same Canelo that we see now.

Canelo was walking Hatton down, throwing a lot of body shots and 1-2 combinations, unable or unwilling to go all out to extend him himself possibly for fear of gassing out badly like he did in his with fight Austin Trout last April. Canelo looks like the same fighter.

The thing with his last fight against Trout was that the WBC set the fight up to where it open scoring and once Canelo saw the lopsided scores that two of the judges had gave him after the 4th and 8th rounds, he just played defense for the last 8 rounds of the fight.

The judges’ scores were pretty lopsided in favor of Canelo, despite Trout out-working and out-landing the tired looking Canelo. I thought Canelo fought well enough to lose by four rounds.

I can’t give rounds to fighters that aren’t doing anything other than throwing an occasional pot and just moving their heads to try and not get hit.

The WBC won’t have open scoring for this fight and if they tried to have it, my guess is Mayweather would have chosen not to take the fight.
