broner544By Eric Thomas: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer plans on meeting with welterweight contender Marcos Maidana’s manager this Monday to try and put a fight together between Maidana and WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s), according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. Broner won the WBA welterweight title last night in beating Paulie Malignaggi by a 12 round split decision in New York.

Rafael said to ESPN last Saturday night “Richard Schaefer said after the fight [between Broner and Malignaggi] that the fight he’d like to make is Adrien Broner vs. Marcos Maidana. They’re going to have a meeting on Monday to talk about the fight. Adrien Broner also said he could drop down to 140.”

Maidana (34-4, 31 KO’s) is ranked #2 by the World Boxing Association, and is in position to get a title shot against Broner.

Golden Boy Promotions also promotes Maidana, so this is a natural fight for them to be looking to make by putting Maidana in with Broner. It also gives Broner a chance to hold onto his WBA title for a while because Maidana is a fight that he could possibly win if he looks to out-box the Argentinian fighter the way that Devon Alexander did last year.

Golden Boy needs to keep Broner at 147 in order to make him a pay per view star because it’s going to be a lot tougher to make him a huge PPV star if he’s fighting at 135 or 140. The bigger stars are at 147, and if they can get Broner adjusted to the weight and fighting with more of urgency then he showed last night against Malignaggi, then they can make him a star by matching him against Maidana, Alexander, Amir Khan and Victor Ortiz. Those four fights would be a good move for Broner’s career in turning him into a PPV attraction.

Broner said at the post fight press conference that he could fight for a world title at 140, 135 or 130 for his next fight, but it looks like Golden Boy Promotions will try and show Broner the logic in keeping him at 147 so that he can become a star.
