Roger Mayweather: Canelo won’t beat Floyd Jr. with size

alvarez434By Dan Ambrose: Roger Mayweather, the uncle and trainer for Floyd Mayweather Jr., doesn’t believe that WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) will be able to crush Mayweather Jr. with his big weight advantage of 20 pounds for this fight. Roger doesn’t think weight wins fights. He thinks intelligence and skills win, and he sees Floyd Jr. as being way above the 22-year-old Canelo in those departments.

Roger said to hustlehoss.com “That’s somebody that they think can beat Floyd. It’s just somebody they believe can beat Floyd…Weight don’t win fights anyways. Weight won’t win this one either… He ain’t no beast like they say he is.”

When Roger says “They” he’s obviously referring to Golden Boy Promotions. They tried heavily hyped Golden Boy fighter Victor Ortiz against Mayweather two years ago, and Mayweather embarrassed Ortiz in stopping him in four rounds.

Now, Golden Boy has got another Golden Goose in Canelo, who will likely end up as another victim of Mayweather. I suspect Canelo will get beaten in a much worse way than Ortiz did because Canelo will stick around for the full 12 rounds and end up getting out-boxed and likely embarrassed by Mayweather, especially in the second half of the fight when Canelo will run out of gas.

It’s true that the hype centering around Canelo is too high for what he’s actually accomplished. When you hear the hype and then go back and watch his fights, you wonder what they are talking about.

Canelo looked terrible against Austin Trout, Shane Mosley, Alfonso Gomez and Matthew Hatton. He was little more than a flat-footed, robotic fighter with stamina problems.

Canelo got past Trout by a 12 round decision that people disagree on.

Who you thought won that fight boils down to which fighter you support. Canelo fans pretty much all think he won; whereas Trout fans see him as having won the fight. I have no preference about either fighter and I had Trout winning the fight. But there’s mistaking the fact that Canelo has looked very average in his fights since moving up to junior middleweight, and Golden Boy has made it a point to match him with welterweights instead of junior middleweights since he moved up to 154.

It gives Canelo a big weight advantage by Golden Boy doing this because he’s already heavy for the junior middleweight division, and then Golden Boy gives him an even bigger advantage by putting him in with welterweights. Mayweather is a welterweight. He holds a belt at 154, but he’s a welterweight.
