Respecting the Sportsman

By Nick Moore - 06/14/2013 - Comments

Recently, I was perusing my twitter feed and I came across Robert the Ghost Guerrero’s post of his direct message conversation/challenge with Victor Ortiz. My initial reaction to this potential bout was one of excitement.

Like many curious humans, I read some of the comments in response to this post, and one of them said something along the lines of how this fight wouldn’t be worth it; That Victor Ortiz is too soft, i.e., the broken jaw and that Robert Guerrero is overrated, based on the “dominance that Floyd Mayweather displayed against him.”

Admittedly, I’m a Guerrero fan and wanted him to beat Floyd. Also, I enjoy watching Victor Ortiz and I wanted him to beat Floyd as well. See a trend? Anyways, that is a different point for a different post.

Boxing is not a sport for the weak. The guys who step in the ring are all up for a battle, including Floyd. These fighters deserve respect in the sense of their sportsmanship and their willingness to step in the ring with one another. There are many, many fighters that I do not respect outside the ring. I think a lot of them, as well rounded men(or being a lack thereof), are cowards. Sportsmanship seems an oddity in boxing too, considering the trash talk, weigh in brawls, and sometimes diva like demands for money. Again, much of this I enjoy and much of this gives the sport a bad rep.

Aside from that though, we as fans have to keep it all in perspective. Get involved in the rivalries. Debate whether Pacquiao can beat Mayweather, although I’ll tell you here the answer is still yes. One fight stolen from him and a step into a hard right doesn’t put a boxer past his prime. Enough of that for now though.

The name of the game is respect & it is, in fact, a game within the reality that is this life. I appreciate the few that will make the sport what it is, despite my disliking of some of them. Let’s be honest too: Most of us fans who make these comments on blogs, articles, etc., would not dare say this stuff to these guys faces.

As a side note, if we got to see Victor Ortiz vs Robert Guerrero on the September 14th undercard, what a privilege. If the promoters could also figure in an Austin Trout fight, that would be a dream card.
