383(Photo credit: Dibella Entertainment) By Dan Ambrose: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) may be the best fighter in the 160 lb. division, but his purse for this Saturday night doesn’t show that for his title defense against Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s) at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

Golovkin will receive $350,000 thousand for this fight; while contender Macklin surprisingly will be making almost as much at $300,000. It doesn’t seem to make a whole lot of sense for Golovkin to only be making $50K more than his challenger.

It also doesn’t make sense that someone like Adrien Broner is made over $1 million as a challenger for his fight against WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi last Saturday night. Broner made over three times as much as Golovkin will be making as the champion.

What this shows you is that Golovkin has got to get better known and much, much better opponents than the likes of Macklin and the other guys he’s been beating up recently. What’s the point of holding down a world title for ages if you’re not going to at least be getting $1 million or more each time you defend the title.

Golovkin needs to consider moving down in weight to 154 and take a page out of the playbook by WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and face mostly welterweights.

154 would bring bigger fights for Golovkin and he could put pressure on Golden Boy to put him in with Canelo, because Canelo isn’t going to move up to 160 to fight Golovkin.

There’s no one really for Golovkin to fight at 160. The top guys don’t want to fight him, and if all he’s getting is in the neighborhood of $300K to fight at that weight, then he should move down and start chasing Canelo, Miguel Cotto and Austin Trout, in addition to all the welterweights that he can try and face like Canelo.

Unbeaten super middleweight contender Thomas Oosthuizen (21-0-1, 13 KO’s) will be getting $30 thousand for his scheduled 10 round bout against undefeated Brandon Gonzales (17-0, 10 KO’s). For his part, Gonzales will be receiving $50 thousand. Both fighters are quality guys and it’s one of those toss-up fights that could go either way. I like Oosthuizen in this one to wear Gonzales down and get a stoppage.
