Punch Out Weekly

golovkin5By Peart Miles: Welcome to another weekly addition of Punch Out Weekly where I will be discussing the big stories coming out of the boxing world this past week. Before I begin with the article, no one was able to predict exactly the correct results from this past Saturday’s boxing card in Brooklyn. However, “A Fan” was the closest with predicting a unanimous decision victory both for Seth Mitchell and Adrien Broner.

Congratulations Sakio Bika

After 13 years of professional boxing and facing the likes of Markus Beyer, Lucian Bute, Joe Calzaghe and Andre Ward, now Sakio Bika is finally a world champion capturing the vacant WBC super middleweight title from the awkward Marco Periban last Saturday. Not sure what will be Bika’s next move as he didn’t look that great in the fight, he called out Andre Ward for a rematch but I’m not sure Andre Ward (HBO) is interested in that bout. George Groves, Thomas Oosthuizen or James Degale maybe the more realistic options for Bika, but a match with Carl Froch could be entertaining.

Heavyweight Dud

Not sure of what I witnessed heavyweight clash between Seth Mitchell and Johnathon Banks, but I’m glad its over. Banks had Mitchell hurt early in the fight with the bell saving Mitchell however after that round Banks didn’t even bother putting any pressure on Mitchell or even throwing a one, two combination. You can’t blame Mitchell, however, he used more of a boxing IQ, by staying away from Banks right hand, holding Banks up close when ever Banks advanced which allowed him to get the decision over Banks. For Banks he should just stick to lacing Wladimir Klitschko’s gloves, while Golden Boy should realize Mitchell’s chin and lack of defensive skill won’t bring them any heavyweight world titles soon, they could cash in on him in a bout against unbeaten Deontay Wilder (if he gets past Sergey Liakhovich)

Give it up for the Magic Magic

Most of us thought he would end up being stopped by Adrien Broner but the “Magic Man” WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi had enough tricks up his sleeve to pull off a split decision defeat (one judge scored the bout in favor of Malignaggi) to the younger man. At first viewing I wasn’t sure how the bout could end in a split decision as I believed Malignaggi was dominated, however after watching the bout a couple more times, it becomes more and more apparent while Broner was waddling around shaking his head Malignaggi was scoring punches. And if the referee had notice and took away points for Broner’s unsportsmanlike  antics during the bout, the bout could have been scored a draw. A big round of applause should be given to Paulie for speaking up against the corruption and foul play that’s is going on in boxing, I disagree with Paulie believing the bout with Broner was fixed but I agree with everything else he said.

Problems For Broner

Ahh, Adrien this was suppose to be your coming out party, instead it was Jessica who became the star after the fight. Broner seemed more intent in embarrassing Malignaggi rather than getting the job done in impressive fashion. Broner is seen to be the next Floyd Mayweather but after seeing he’s antics in the ring I’m sorry to say he looked more like a Zab Judah. Judah was a young talented boxer who had the world at he’s feet but outside influence and a lack of dedication derailed Zab Judah. Broner is still 23 and has time on he’s hand to get back to impressing the boxing world. Golden Boy shouldn’t be looking to be making money from him already, they should be building him up slowly, just like Bob Arum did with Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather. However, yes, Broner is young but going up and down weight will have some affects on he’s body, ideally Broner should moved down to light welter. Take on the likes of Mauricio Herrera and Humberto Soto before facing the Lamont Petersons, Danny Garcia and Lucas Matthysse.

Quillin vs Jacobs?

Peter Quillin doesn’t look like he will get the bigger names in the middleweight division yet, but there is talk of him defending he’s world title against Danny Jacobs. The former amateur star has had a difficult few years, losing by KO in he’s first world title fight also being diagnosed with cancer, later being told he will never box again, Jacobs fought back from all he’s adversities to get into a position for a world title. If the bout comes to fruition it will no doubt take place in Brooklyn, for me I will be rooting for Jacobs as he is just a wonderful inspiration for us all. Peter Quilin on the other hand is a good boxer with a good set of skills and most importantly he has heart, however it’s hard to connect with Quilin as he doesn’t really engage fans with either he’s words or actions. My heart says Jacobs but wouldn’t be surprised if Quilin wins by decision

Golden Boy Ali

Former prospect I think the world has forgot about, Sadam Ali has signed with promotional outfit Golden boy. This is really good news for fans of Ali as he has shown quite some promise since turning pro after the Beijing Olympics in 2008  but just hasn’t had the enough exposure. Time will tell what the World Kid Ali can achieve in the pro ranks.

Golovkin vs. Macklin

WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin gets a pretty hard test this Saturday and I don’t believe he will be knocking out the opponent as easy as he has in previous bouts. Matthew Macklin is one of the toughest guys at middleweight, being pretty much robbed against Felix Sturm, Macklin later put on a valiant effort against Sergio Martinez later being stopped in the 11th round. I see Golovkin winning but not by a KO blow, I see a highly motivated Macklin being stopped by he’s corner in the final rounds, what do you guys think?

Finally something for the reader to think about, and please leave your thoughts on the comment section. How would Adrien Broner fare against the same Diego Corrales that Floyd Mayweather Jr fought when he was 23?

Thanks for reading, see you guys next week.
