mora2By Jim Dower: Former WBC junior middleweight champion Sergio Mora (24-3-2, 7 KO’s) outclassed the hard hitting Polish fighter Grzegorz Proksa (29-3, 21 KO’s) in defeating him by a 10 round unanimous decision on Friday night at the Veteran’s Coliseum, in Jacksonville, Florida.

The final judges’ scores were 96-94, 96-94, and 98-92. Neither fighter looked good, but Mora did enough in the second half of the fight by landing the cleaner shots to get the win.

Proksa was clearly the better fighter in the first five rounds in pushing the fight to Mora and landing hard left hands and right hooks to the head. Mora fought well in the 1, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10, but was outworked in rounds 2, 3, 4 and 7 by Proksa.

It was a close fight and the judge that scored it 98-92 seemed off with that score. You couldn’t give Mora more than 6 rounds because he was getting outworked badly by Proksa in four of the rounds.

Mora did enough to get the win, but it wasn’t pretty stuff and definitely not a good enough performance to make you want to see him fighting for a title anytime soon. Someone Gennady Golovkin would destroy Mora by getting in close and taking out his body. Proksa didn’t do that tonight. He would land a pot shot or two and then back off immediately. It was nothing but pure pot shots from Proksa and no inside game whatsoever.

Mora began to land some nice right hands in the second half of the fight. However, he still wasn’t very consistent. He would land some nice shots and then disappear for a while before landing another hard shot. It’s kind of how Mora has always fought. He fights in spurts and then disappears for long stretches. Fighters that are aggressive and throw a lot of punches will always give Mora problems. His main problem is he just hasn’t been an active fighter since losing his WBC junior middleweight title in a rematch with Vernon Forrest in 2008.

Since that fight, Mora has fought only 6 times in the last 5 years. That’s not nearly enough if you’re just a contender. In Mora’s case, he’s been so inactive that he’s not even a contender anymore. The win over Proksa tonight will likely put Mora back in the top 15, but likely near the bottom. For Mora to get close enough for one of the champions in the middleweight division to fight him he’s going to have to fight more often.
