Mikey too big for Juanma; beats him with size

garcia55By Dan Ambrose: You’ve got to feel a little bit sorry for Juan Manuel Lopez (33-3, 30 KO’s) tonight after his 4th round TKO loss to the much heavier looking Mikey Garcia (32-0, 27 KO’s) in Dallas, Texas. Mikey had failed to make weight the day earlier in giving up his WBO featherweight title on the scales.

It looked like Mikey had decided to either win the fight on size or lose the fight by making weight. Mikey chose to win, and he came in over the limit. I wish there was a scale to put Mikey on as he entered the ring because he looked at least 15-20 pounds heavier to me compared to Juanma. There was no way Juanma could beat a fighter as big as Mikey is; it wasn’t going to happen.

Mikey needed someone more his own size like Terrence Crawford or Lucas Matthysse. Juanma didn’t have the weight to stand in there with Mikey’s heavy shots, and the outcome was predictable.

As far as the fight goes, Mikey knocked Lopez down twice, and the fight was over after the 2nd knockdown of the fight in the 4th when Mikey hit Lopez with a left hook to the head that put him down. I think Juanma would have been able to take the shot if the two fighters were the same size, but he wasn’t going to be able to take a punch from someone as big as Mikey.

Mikey is going to move up in weight now, supposedly to 130. I think he needs to move to 140 and start facing the light welterweights because he looked as big as a light welterweight tonight. I think lightweight would be good, but no way not super featherweight. Mikey’s still too big for fighters at that weight. He needs to be in with guys his own size so that it’ll be more of an even playing field in terms of weight.

I think Juanma can still fight, but he needs to be more careful in the guys he faces so that he’s not fighting someone that outweighs him. Juanma isn’t a big fighter, so he needs to be in with true featherweights and focus on fighting only them.
