garcia2By Dan Ambrose: WBO featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (31-0, 26 KO’s) had surgery on his broken nose from his win over Orlando Salido last January and his nose is now healed and he’s ready for his fight against former two-division world champion Juan Manuel Lopez (33-2, 30 KO’s) this Saturday, June 15th at the American Airlines Center, in Dallas, Texas, USA. Garcia’s nose may be healed but it’s still going to be a prominent target for Lopez’s big punches and I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if Lopez breaks it again with a big shot.

I just hope that Garcia doesn’t complain to the referee that he can’t breathe through his nose and then the fight gets stopped again.

Last time, Garcia was gassing out in the 8th round and taking punishment from Salido when two fighters collided heads, breaking Garcia’s nose in the process. Instead of fighting on, Garcia complained that he couldn’t breathe through his nose when he was asked by the referee. That enabled the fight to be stopped and it went to the scorecards.

The problem here is, at least for Lopez, is if Garcia jumps out on another early lead and starts to fade like he did against Salido around the 7th round, if he sustains another broken nose, we’ll see the fight go to the scorecards and Garcia could win again by him having started early.

I hope it doesn’t happen like that because it would be a terrible way of winning every time with your nose getting broken and then the fight going to the scorecards. Garcia’s nose is very prominent and I think it’s going to be a problem for him in this fight, as well as future fights where Garcia is facing a big puncher who doesn’t cave in immediately like a lot of the weak opponents that Garcia has faced.

If Lopez can make it to the 8th, I think he can win this fight because Mikey’s stamina is not good. He’s got a lot of early knockouts on his resume I don’t think he’s been conditioned for 12 round fights. He’s like middleweight David Lemieux with his tendency to get quick knockouts, but then when he’s extended past the 6th round, he gasses out.
