By Dan Ambrose: Mikey Garcia (31-0, 26 KO’s) couldn’t make weight for his fight against Juan Manuel Lopez (33-2, 30 KO’s) after coming in at 128 lbs. instead of 126, the weight or the featherweight division.

As a result, Garcia loses his WBO featherweight title on the scales and doesn’t have a chance to win it tomorrow night against Lopez. However, Lopez does have a chance to win the now vacant WBO title if he’s able to beat Mikey.

According to Kevin Iole of Yahoo, Mikey chose not to try to drop the 2 pounds to get down to 126. This suggests that Mikey must have had a real hard time trying to make the weight, and that’s kind of disappointing because it tells that he’s either outgrown the division or he didn’t plan well enough with his training and dieting for the fight.

Juanma and Mikey will be fighting on Saturday night at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. Up until the weight problem, Mikey was considered the favorite to win the fight. But now that we’re seeing that he struggled to make weight for the fight, we could see Juanma beat him tomorrow night.

This definitely gives Juanma a shot of confidence because he knows what happens when a fighter is struggling with the weight like Mikey was for this fight.

Where we could see Mikey showing the signs of his struggle with the weight tomorrow night is in the second half of the fight. When a fighter like Mikey is having problems making the weight, then you see that fighter tend to run out of gas after the 6th.

We’ve seen it with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and many, many more fighters. That could be one of the reasons why Mikey looked so exhausted in the 7th and 8th rounds of his fight against Orlando Salido last January.
