By Dan Ambrose: WBO featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (31-0, 26 KO’s) came in 2 whole pounds over the 126 lb. weight limit during today’s weigh-in for his first title defense against Juan Manuel Lopez (33-2, 30 KO’s) on Saturday night at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

Mikey weighed in at 128 at the weigh-in, but he reportedly has two pounds to lose make weight for the fight. Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports is saying that Mikey won’t be trying to take off the two pounds for some reason.

I guess there’s some worry there that he might be too weak after he takes of the weight and maybe he’s content to just focus on getting the win. If that’s the case then Garcia will lose his WBO featherweight title. Juanma, who easily made the weight at 125.25 lbs. today, will still have a chance to capture the belt if he wins.

I had a feeling that Mikey might have a hard time making weight when I saw his last fight against Orlando Salido last January. Mikey looked really big for the weight class, and I couldn’t believe he was able to make the featherweight limit because he looked light a light welterweight [140] in that fight.

It could be that Mikey’s days of fighting as a featherweight are about over. At 25, it might be time for Mikey to move up to super featherweight (130) or better yet lightweight (135). Mikey may not have the advantages that he has in fighting smaller featherweights but at least he won’t have to struggle to make the weight.
