Mayweather vs. Canelo: Boxer vs. Fighter

canelo900By Mark Colleti: This year we’ve seen some good boxing, and we’ve seen some really good fights. I can appreciate a war where two fighter exchange and give it their all, I mean, who doesn’t?

Are you going to tell me you did not enjoy Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado, Ruslan Provodnikov vs. Tim Bradley, Josesito Lopez vs. Marcos Maidana and Mickey Ward vs. Arturo Gatti?

I must admit, watching a good fight is more entertaining than watching a boxing match. I know the sport is called boxing and not MMA, but let’s be honest, after watching a good fight; you just want to watch it again.

Fighters should fight fighters and boxers, should fight boxers. I do not really enjoy a match where one boxer is running and one fighter is chasing him around the ring.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is a great boxer, but, he is not a fighter. I’m not insulting him, it’s his style. And that is why he fights fighters. I saw his last match against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, and it wasn’t for me. I believe his undercard was really good and basically ordered the event for the Daniel Ponce de Leon vs. Abner Mares fight.

Somehow WBA/WBO super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux is being criticized for not fighting and just sticking to his style, boxing. Strange. In his last fight against Nonito Donaire, he made Donaire look bad. I expected that. A boxer vs. a Fighter, Donaire was not able to catch him and land the shots he wanted. Still, that shot Rigo gave Donaire in the 12th was beautiful.

Manny Pacquiao is a great fighter, but, as a boxer he does not have the skills of Mayweather. That’s his style. Maybe if he did more jumping jacks in training he could fight more like Floyd, but, if you put a fighter against a fighter you are sure to have an entertaining night and your money’s worth.

No need for a huge undercard, no need for drama like the WWE, just guts or as they say “Cojones”.

Fighters should fight fighters and boxers should fight boxers. In November Pacquiao is fighting Rios. Fighter vs Fighter. Now, that’s a good fight. A fight like that makes you wait for the main event.

Floyd is fighting Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Canelo is a fighter. I believe he is going to chase Mayweather while he’s dancing all over the ring. I hope they have a good undercard. Why doesn’t Floyd fight another boxer, like Erislandy Lara. Now that would be a good Boxing match. Two talented boxers facing each other would be very intriguing for boxing fans.

Again, this is my opinion; I wanted to use these two examples because, either way, the comments sections always end up talking about Floyd & Pacquiao.

I wish Lucas Matthysse would fight Marcos Maidana. I wish Provodnikov would fight Rios. Alvarado maybe against Juan Manuel Marquez, Lara and Mayweather.

Now, you may please leave your comments at the bottom.
