Mayweather Sr: Broner isn’t going to be another Floyd Jr.

broner432By Eric Thomas: After having seen how many times Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) was hit in his last fight by Gavin Rees, Floyd Mayweather Sr. says he doesn’t see him as being another Floyd Jr., but he does think Broner can still be a good fighter even if he’s not at the level of his son Floyd Jr.

Broner has been compared a lot to Mayweather Jr. because of the way he copies his fighting style and with the way he talks and carries himself.

Floyd Sr. told Hustleboss.com “He’s not going to be another Floyd, but he can grow into something good. This is a thinking man’s game. You have to use your brain. That dude [Gavin Rees] that Broner [fought]. I don’t understand it. He shouldn’t be getting hit with those punches at all.”

The fact is Broner does get hit a lot in his fights, and not just in his fight with Rees. He gets hit in most of his bouts when he’s facing someone that has some skills and offense.

Broner imitates Mayweather Jr. from the waist up, but he can’t imitate Mayweather’s hand speed, reflexes or his ability to move with his feet. Broner fights flat-footed and he doesn’t have the leg speed to be able to move around the ring the way that Mayweather Jr. can, and he’s never going to be able to do this because he’s got a different kind of body.

The differences in hand speed and reflexes between Broner and Mayweather Jr. is the biggest thing that will keep Broner from becoming another Mayweather. Broner doesn’t have the speed and the ability to get out of the way of punches the way that Mayweather Jr. does, and this isn’t going to change anytime soon.

Broner faces WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) this Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. We’re going to see how good Broner’s defense is in this fight because Malignaggi plans on to keep Broner bottled up on the outside and helpless to land his best shots.
