By Babatis Banda: We are human, flesh and blood. It is impossible for a mere mortal to please all his fellow mortals. Not even Jesus or Mohamed as it were, was able to please everybody. Not even God, our heavenly father, the creator of both the heavens and the earth has been able to please everyone. Reasons are many, but among the many a few stand out.
Man by his nature is limited in his thinking. Some are better off, while others are worse off. Depending on which side you fall, you are either appreciative or optimistic and objective or you are either simple minded, myopic and very negative in everything you do. You can either be appreciative in nature, or you can be sadistic in nature. Whichever you are, it may reveal a little more of your environment, or how you were brought up or indeed, something about you as a person.
While it is acceptable, in normal circumstances to have different points of view, or to differ in perception of things around us, objectivity and reality should influence our thoughts more than just hatred, envy and jealousy. We are therefore cognizant of the fact that this world is what it is today because of these diverse characters, some sober and some drunken in their thoughts. It is with this view, that I strongly feel that Mayweather Junior, an accomplished fighter of our era cannot please everybody. In fact, he does not need to.
Here are pure facts. Mayweather jnr is undefeated. You can argue about why he is undefeated but it matters less. His record is as clean as a clean record can ever be. Mayweather is a multiple world champion who holds world titles in different divisions. He has achieved this, not by fighting bums but has had to beat champions to get their belts. He has not achieved his greatness through cheating of any kind, his skills are evident.
You can’t cheat on skills, can you? Others cheat by gaining physical power using prohibited substances, don’t they?
If you are objective enough to look closely at his career, he is the most untouched boxer. He is not battle worn, or damaged goods as they say, because he fights smart. As proof of his impenetrable defence, he has never been put on the canvas in his entire illustrious career. Now, are these just claims or the truth? The answer is right there staring at you…..he is the most well paid sports personality, not just in boxing but the entire sport. That does not happen with cheats and if it does, cheats do go down at one point or another as it would be inevitable. This man has been at the helm of the sport for over 17 years now.
Now, just see how the bar is constantly being raised for him. Greatness is being recognized by his detractors without them even admitting it. When he chose Guerrero, he was scared of Saul Canelo Alvarez. Now that Canelo is on Floyd’s radar, he is now afraid of Martinez and Andre Ward. You will actually realize that Canelo, Ward and Martinez are middleweight fighters and yet Mayweather has to fight them until he takes his first loss and only then will they rest. However, the future hall of famer does not need to please everybody, he doesn’t need to.
