Malignaggi wants a rematch against Broner

broner0009By Allan Fox: The beaten Paulie Malignaggi (32-5, 7 KO’s) says he wouldn’t mind getting a rematch with Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) to try and recapture his WBA welterweight title that he lost to Broner last Saturday night by a 12 round split decision at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Malignaggi feels that he shouldn’t have lost that fight and that he did more than enough to deserve the decision by him out-working Broner the entire fight. Malignaggi thinks it was boxing politics that led to him losing the fight in his own hometown.

Malignaggi said “Yeah, it’ll be nice to get a rematch. It would be cool to get a rematch. A rematch would appeal to me. If Broner would want to make a statement and win more conclusively, I would be open to it.”

As much as Malignaggi feels like he got robbed, he’s probably just going to have to grin and bear it and accept the loss for what it is because Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has another direction he wants to take Broner in, and that doesn’t appear to include Malignaggi at the moment. Broner himself is talking about wanting to capture other world titles.

Malignaggi probably won’t ever get another chance at Broner unless he’s able to win a world title against one of the other welterweight champions in the near future. If Malignaggi can do that then it’s possible, but not likely, that Broner could face him again in a rematch. However, Malignaggi would have to look really good in beating whichever champion he faces for Broner and Golden Boy Promotions to show interest in a rematch.

At 32 – and without much power to speak of – Malignaggi’s chances of picking up another world title isn’t very good. At this point it might be tough for Malignaggi to even get another chance at a world title unless he stays busy in the next couple of years. If Malignaggi plays his cards right, he could get a shot against IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander if he’s lucky.
