Maidana wants Mayweather if he gets past Lopez on Saturday

maidana433By Allan Fox: Marcos Maidana (33-3, 30 KO’s) has set a big goal for himself in targeting Floyd Mayweather Jr. if Maidana can get past Josesito Lopez (30-5, 18 KO’s) in their fight at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California, USA.

Maidana wants to fight the best and to him Mayweather is the very best in the sport. If Maidana can’t get Mayweather, he’d be open to fighting the winner of the Keith Thurman vs. Diego Chaves bout as well.

Maidana said to RingTV “My goal is to fight Floyd Mayweather and I have to keep working and training for it.”

Mayweather has a potentially tough fight on September 14th against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. If Mayweather beats Canelo, his likely next fight after that will be against Amir Khan if Khan defeats Devon Alexander in their proposed fight on December 7th.

Once Mayweaher gets Khan out of the way it’s unknown who he’d be fighting. Maidana could be a possibility but he’d face stiff competition from the winner of the Lucas Matthysse vs. Danny Garcia fight. The winner of that fight will probably end up facing Mayweather next year.

Maidana shouldn’t look past Josesito Lopez because this guy is more than good enough to defeat Maidana if he’s not on his game on Saturday night. Maidana was beaten by Amir Khan and Devon Alexander and out-boxed by Erik Morales in a fight Maidana won. Maidana also struggled to defeat DeMarcus Corley three years ago in a fight that was a lot closer than the judges’ scores had it.

Lopez is good enough to out-box Maidana if he fights a disciplined fight. Lopez will have to focus in this fight because he can’t afford to lose concentration and start brawling with Maidana like he did in his last fight against Canelo Alvarez last September.

Lopez was stopped in the 5th round in that fight and it’s surprising the fight lasted that long because Lopez was down in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds but Canelo was too patient to finish him off when he had him hurt.
