Maidana picks Khan to beat Alexander

khan#2By Scott Gilfoid: Marcos Maidana is picking Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) to beat IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander (25-1, 14 KO’s) in their proposed fight on December 7th. Maidana has lost two both fighters, but he feels that Khan’s hand speed will be key to him beating Alexander.

Maidana was beaten worse by Alexander than Khan, but he still thinks Khan will be too fast for Alexander when that fight happens in December.

Maidana said this to esnewsreporting.com when asked who will win in a fight between Khan and Alexander: “Amir Khan punches fast. Alexander [is] not strong, no power.”

I think it really doesn’t matter whether Alexander has huge power or not; I still think he’ll knock Khan out because he punches harder than Julio Diaz and he’s a lot faster than him. We just saw Khan getting hurt again and again and again by Julio Diaz in their fight last April. Khan is very fortunate to have won that fight.

Khan looked shaky basically the entire last half of the fight and he’s really lucky he didn’t get knocked out because a loss to Diaz would have been a show stopper for him.

Golden Boy Promotions wants to match Khan up with Floyd Mayweather Jr. next year if Khan beats Alexander. Khan would still likely end up facing Mayweather in 2014 even if Mayweather loses his September 14th fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

There would probably be a rematch between Mayweather and Canelo straightaway but after that, Khan would still get Mayweather next year. But Khan won’t get Mayweather if he can’t past Alexander and I have a funny feeling that he won’t be able to do it.

Alexander looked pretty good in beating Lee Purdy last month in stopping him in 7. The fight likely would have been over much earlier if Purdy had come to fight instead of just covering up like a punching bag for 7 rounds.

Khan wouldn’t fight that way against Alexander. He’d have too much pride and would look to exchange with him. By doing so, Khan would leave himself open to getting hit with some big shots from Alexander and that’s all it would take is a big shot or two, and Khan would be knocked out.
