Marcos Maidana vs Josesito LopezBy Dan Ambrose: Moments ago, Marcos Maidana (34-3, 31 KO’s) obliterated Josesito Lopez (30-6, 18 KO’s) by a 6th round TKO on Saturday night at the on Saturday night at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California, USA. Maidana dropped Lopez in the 6th round from a right to the head.

Maidana then unloaded on a badly hurt Lopez with a nonstop storm of shots causing the referee Lou Moret to stop the fight at 1:18 of the round.

Lopez had fought well in the 4th round where he appeared to hurt Maidana with some hard head and body shots. At point it looked like Lopez had knocked Maidana down, but the referee ruled it a slip. Maidana was kind of pushed down but he was definitely hurt at the time.

In between the 4th and 5th rounds, Maidana’s trainer Robert Garcia gave him a pep talk and that seemed to re-energize for the 5th, as he really punished Lopez for the entire 5th round, nailing him with uppercuts and hard body shots. Lopez made a huge mistake of going to the ropes and trying to fight Maidana with his back against the ropes. This made it really easy for Maidana to pound Lopez.

In the 6th round, Lopez hurt by a right to the body followed by a right to the head that dropped him. After Lopez got back up, Maidana unloaded on him with some wicked head shots that had Lopez in all kinds of trouble, causing him to double over at point and back up to the ropes. Maidana then tagged Lopez with several more unanswered shots ending with the referee halting the fight with Lopez still on his feet.

I would have liked to have seen the fight go to the conclusion because the referee jumped in way too quickly. Lopez may have been able to survive if the action had been allowed to continue.

Junior middleweight contender Erislandy Lara (18-1-2, 12 KO’s) had to get up off the deck twice to come back and stop an injured Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s) in the 10th round to capture the interim WBA junior middleweight title.

Lara tagged Angulo with some hard shots on his already swollen left eye in the 10th round, resulting in Angulo turning his back in a no mas move. The fight was then halted. As bad as Angulo’s left eye was swollen, it could be that he has a broken bone in there.

It’s unfortunate for Angulo because he had taken charge of the fight up to the point and had knocked Lara down twice with big shots. Angulo had been dominated in the first half of the fight, but he kept coming forward and working on Lara’s body and that took a lot of the Cuban. Had Angulo not suffered the eye injury he would have likely swept the 10th, 11th and 12th to get the victory.
